UNIFI's research focus is District 4 in Florence, particularly the urban areas of Isolotto, Legnaia, and Soffiano. These areas represent a significant context for examining current issues such as environmental quality, resilience to climate change, and citizens’ health.
District 4 stands out for its variety of urban spaces. The area closest to the Arno River, called Isolotto, an emblematic example of a "garden city", is renowned for the presence of extensive green areas and vital spaces for the sociality of its inhabitants, while, in contrast, Legnaia and Soffiano, with their high population density and infrastructure, present challenges related to walkability and climate resilience and consequent repercussions on human health.
Starting from these considerations, 3 different pedestrian paths have been identified for the research:
1. The Urban Margin: The aim of the analysis is to understand how marginal spaces influence environmental quality. The proposals are aimed at improving marginal routes to make the neighbourhood more livable, accessible and sustainable.
2. The Urban Connector: The analysis of this area is aimed at understanding how the most vulnerable citizens move around the neighbourhood. The project proposes to improve urban areas by increasing accessibility to places, safety and further increasing outdoor comfort with consequent benefits on the health of residents.
3. The School Network: The study is aimed at understanding how the youngest citizens move around the neighbourhood. Regeneration proposals will be studied that work on safety, environmental quality and accessibility to school facilities, as well as enhancing courtyards and green areas with the aim of developing a more inclusive, healthy and stimulating urban environment.
